WINTER HIKES and SNOWSHOEING IN THE LYCIAN REGION

“A Unique Way to Explore the Spectacular Turkish Mediterranean”

 

This special tour combines the convenience of the temperate Mediterranean climate with the opportunity to experience the snowy mountain wilderness of stunning Turkish Riviera.

Start tour in Fethiye

We will arrive in Dalaman airport. Transfer to Fethiye (1 hr). Time permitting, we may have an opportunity for a wander in the old town of Fethiye or try a tandem paragliding flight from Mt. Babadag (1960 m). We will also fit our snowshoes tonight. Overnight at standard hotel in Fethiye. (D)

Explore Karkın Plateau

Today, we will drive by jeep to Mt. Karkin area towering above the bay of Fethiye (1.5 hrs). We will go up to Karkin plateau with the wonderful sights of the Western Taurus Mountains. (Approximately 5 hrs walking, 10 km, 400 m up and 400 m down). Overnight at standard hotel in Fethiye. (B L D)

Explore Lake Girdev

After a scenic jeep ride (1.5 hrs), we will start the day snowshoeing up to Girdev Lake. Situated at 2200 meters, Girdev is the largest lake in Fethiye area. The frozen surface of the lake with the reflections of the elevations around offer some spectacular views. Tombs from the ancient settlers can be seen around. Returning to our point of start, we will transfer to our hotel in Elmali town (1 hr) for the next three nights. Approximately 6 hrs walking, 14 km, 500 m up and 500 m down. Hike Yesil (Green) Lake and Subasi Plateau

Today, we are going to explore the area near Mt Akdag (3024 m), one of the highest elevations in the region. Our morning jeep ride (1 hr) will deliver us in Gombe village. Lake Yesil is situated at the foot of this magnificent mountain, where we will enjoy a hike up to Subasi meadow via the lake. Approximately 6 hrs walking, 10 km, 500 m up 500 m down. Overnight at basic hotel in Elmali. (B L D)

Hike onto Mt Kizlar Sivrisi

Today we will discover a remote part of the region where we may get to see the wild horses called “Yilka” running about. In the morning, the jeep track winding around the hills will take up and beyond Buyuk Sogle village (1.5 hrs). After getting off the jeep, we will head onto the snow covered skirts of Mt. Kizlar Sivrisi (3071 m), the highest and the most dramatic elevation of the western Taurus chain. The area also boasts a bird sanctuary called Avlan Lake amid intact Juniper and Cedar Forests. After a vigorous day out, we will get back home (1.5 hr). Approximately 6 hrs walking, 12 km, 600 m up, 600 m down. Overnight at basic hotel in Elmali. (B L D)

AM Cable Car Up Mt Olympos (2366 m), PM Visit Ancient Phaselis, Drive Antalya

This morning we are going to the legendary mountain Olympos (2 hrs). Known as “Tahtali” (eg. woody) among the locals, the ancient Lycian people had adopted this formidable mountain as the residence of almighty Zeus and his family. We will ascend to the top by cable car accompanied by wild mountain scenes and cedar forests down below. The views on the top are absolutely breathtaking! The energetic can try a short snowshoe wander about the summit area (weather permiting – maximum 1 hr). Before we reach our hotel in Antalya (1.5 hrs), we will also pay a short visit to a very well preserved greco-roman sight Phaselis, where we will enjoy observing our famous mountain through the eyes of ancient peoples. For the energetic ones, there is also a swimming opportunity here after encountering snow at the top! The next two nights, we will stay in the world famous Turkish Riviera Antalya (1.5 hr). Antalya is a unique place combining an immense number of historcal monuments with the superb panoramic views of the mountains we have explored so far. Overnight at standard hotel in Antalya. (B L D)

Snowshoe around Saklıkent Ski Resort

This morning will be our grand finale doing our last activity at the beautiful location of Saklikent ski resort (1.5 hrs). It is located on the skirts of Mt. Bakirli (2547 m), at the top of which the biggest sky observatory of Turkey stands. (Approximately 3 hrs walking, 8 km, 300 m up, 300 m down.) In the late afternoon, we will head back to Antalya (1.5 hrs). During our down time in the late afternoon, there will be a well earned opportunity for an invigorating Turkish bath experience. Overnight at standard hotel in Antalya. (B L)

Transfer Antalya Airport, Tour Ends

This morning our tour will end at Antalya Airport (1/2 hr). (B)
