An activity week in the volcanic Cappadocia region of Turkey dotted by the colossal fairy chimneys followed by a trek through the majestic mountains of the Taurus Range.

Hike Through Red and Rose Valleys

Today we will have a great introduction of rural Turkey exploring the otherworldly Cappadocia region on foot. Starting our hike at the red hole we will scale the angulated trails offering amazing views all around us. The incredible formations extend as far as the eyes can see and that there are lots of rock-cut churches dating back to the early Christianity which we will discover during our hike.

Visit Kaymakli Underground City, Drive to Taurus Mountains

Morning departure to the mountains, we will first stop en-route to visit an incredible UNESCO site, Kaymakli Underground city. The first floor of this unique site was excavated during the Hittite period (1600 BC.) and later 8 more floors were added making it extend up to 55m below ground level. In this extraordinary complex, one could find everything necessary for a community living: stable, kitchen, storage, church and living rooms. Arriving at the village of Cukurbag (1550m) situated on the foot hills of the Taurus Mountains where we have a home hosted lunch with the locals. After lunch and a cup of black Turkish tea, it will be time to begin our hike to our first camp (1850m).

Maden Valley to Lake Karagol

Today we are hiking along the river Ecemis, in the heart of the valley of Maden (eg. Mine). Our goal is to access the beautiful Lake Karagol (2850m), where our camp is situated. There will be time for swimming and walking towards the summits encircling our camp.

Lake Karagol to Yedigol Plateau

The initial part of our alpine highland hike this morning leads to Lake Yildiz (eg. Star) and then we continue up to Akçay Yaylasi (eg. Meadow) and Teke Kalesi (eg. Goat’s Castle, 3517m) saddle, which is also a bonus summit opportunity for the energetic. Now is the plateau of Yedigol (eg. Seven Lakes) lying below our feet, we will first walk down to the plateau and continue onto the camp (3100 m). The camp site is at a fantastic location at foot of the impressive cliffs such as Direktas (eg. Pillar rock) pillar forming a dramatic 400 meter tall backdrop.

Yedigoller to Sokullupinar via Mount Emler (3723m)

Today is log day but fun day, first climbing Mount Emler (3723m), the third highest summit of the Taurus mountains. The top extends a superb view of the entire range with the distant stratovolcanoes Mount Hasan (3268m) and Mount Erciyes (3918 m). We carry on downhill for our lunch break at Celikbuyduran (eg. Steel freezing, 3450 m) pass, where a spring of water is gushing from the rocks.  Following a well deserved siesta, we keep descending through Karayalak Gorge aiming to our camp called Sokullupinar (2000m).

Sokullupinar to Kayseri

After an active week of unforgettable walks, we will have relaxed morning to start the day. After a lazy breakfast, we will drive onto Kayseri. In the afternoon, we will explore Kayseri and its well preserved Ottoman and Seljuk heritage. Kayseri is also famous for its delicious cuisine which will be able to try during our farewell dinner tonight.

Our trip ends and we take a transfer to Kayseri airport.
